I have tried so many homemade granola bar recipes and often have been left dissatisfied. Seriously, who knew that making homemade granola bars could be so trying? So many granola bar recipes are hit or miss, they can be too crumbly, crunchy, gooey, sweet, not sweet enough…you get the picture. I have finally (after MANY experimental batches) created a homemade granola bar recipe that is basic (super easy!) and easily customizable (yay!).
If you are looking to ditch the store-bought granola bars and make your own this recipe is for you. You can keep this recipe basic or choose an add-in ingredient(s) that will satisfy your family. I like to mix up the mix in’s, a few of our favorites are dried cherries, cacao nibs, chocolate chips, peanut butter, raisins, or sometimes none at all (if you have a really sweet tooth check out my chocolate & coconut topped granola bar recipe!).
If you are ready to whip up a batch of homemade granola bars I have good news, you probably already have all of the ingredients in your kitchen so hurry get in there and make some…they are oh so good!
What you need:
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1/2 cup ground flax-seed
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 cup local honey
- 1 egg, beaten (or egg substitute)
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
What you do:
In a large bowl, mix together the oats, wheat germ, ground flax seeds, cinnamon, flour, salt and mix-ins of your choice.
Pour in honey, egg (or egg substitute), coconut oil, and vanilla.
Mix well, I use my hands. Add the mixture into a prepared pan. I find it easy to line my 9×13 inch baking dish with parchment paper, it makes it easy to remove and cut up the granola bars, if you are not using parchment paper make sure to oil your baking dish before adding mixture to the pan, pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees F or until the bars begin to brown on the edges. Remove the bars from the oven and allow to sit for 5 minutes. At this point I remove the bars using the parchment paper.
Next, cut the bars into your desired sizes of bars (do this while they are still warm).
