Homemade Dog Treats

Ava asked if we could make our dog, Laika, homemade dog treats.  I thought that making homemade dog treats was a brilliant idea!  I am not sure why I never thought about making homemade pet food.  I make so many homemade items from homemade velvetta cheese to homemade hand sanitizer but never homemade pet food.  I have made such changes in the way that our family eats but our many pets have never benefited from this change…until now.

Making homemade dog treats was super easy and Laika, our dog, loves them.

This is the first of many treats that I plan to make for him.  It is super easy….

Here is what you need:

2 cups  whole wheat flour, 1 cup cornmeal, 1 egg, 3 tablespoons of oil (I used coconut oil), 2 teaspoons chopped fresh parsley, 3/4 cup chicken broth (I used homemade but if you use store-bought use the low sodium variety)

Here is what you do:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.  Mix the flour and cornmeal in one bowl.  In a separate bowl mix the egg, oil, parsley, and chicken broth.  Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and mix until a dough forms.

Knead and roll our the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.

Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into your desired treat size.

Bake for 15 minutes.  Make sure you cool the homemade dog treats before handing them out!

I feel bad that I never thought about making homemade dog food before.  I certainly wouldn’t want all of my meals to be the same day after day.  I am sure that Laika will enjoy the variety and taste of home cooked meals.  I am headed to the store to buy bulk brown rice tomorrow to begin making all of his food in our kitchen.  I wonder if he would like quinoa, or benefit from chia seeds? I will post more pet recipes soon!

  1. I don’t know about chia seeds but my dad gives quinoa to his dog. I gave him a big bag a while back and he didn’t care for it so he decided to feed it to the dog. She also gets brown rice and other good stuff. I’m very interested to find out what you end up feeding Laika. It would be nice to not have to buy dog food (and pay the price for the good stuff!).

I make my dogs food. Have been for a few years. My dog was overweight and none of the store, low fat food was working. I use a recipe from, The Whole Pet Diet. She has lost 10 pounds.
