Homemade Moon Sand

October 4th, 2012 | Posted by Angela Roberts in Crafts | Homeschool | Sensory Play | unschool

We are currently learning about space and we were due for a new sensory bin.  It seems that it was the perfect time for a homemade moon sand sensory bin!

Making homemade moon sand is super easy and you probably already have the two ingredients in your home.  All you do is mix up, I had the kids do this part, 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil and voila, moon sand!  Making your own moon sand is super fun and it saves you money (a box of white moon sand is $18 at amazon!).

We made our moon sand in a long shallow bin so all of the kids could have their own space to play.

I added a few space themed toys….

And a few construction trucks so they could haul and dump the sand…..

This sensory bin has provided so much fun.  Alex really enjoyed the ‘feel’ of it….

Our neighborhood friends came by and helped us make the sand and play…..

I will say that moon sand is an outdoor sensory bin at our house.  Being outside makes for super easy clean up.  Once the kids are done playing for the day I put the lid on it then plug in the leaf blower and blow off the patio, easy peasy!
