Making homemade condiments is a great way to eat healthier while saving money. I enjoy making our own condiments for both reasons and have been making homemade ketchup for several years. The first homemade ketchup recipe I shared uses honey as a sweetener, the second recipe I shared uses sugar as a sweetener but it calls for way less than store-bought ketchup, and this newest homemade ketchup recipe I am sharing uses NO sugar – instead I use stevia. This homemade sugar-free ketchup is so easy to make and so yummy that even the pickiest people at your table will love it.
What is Stevia?
Stevia is a herb that is naturally very sweet. Stevia is a plant that was discovered more than 1,500 years ago in the rainforests of Paraguay and is now currently grown all of the world. Stevia is considered to be 100 to 200 times sweeter than sugar, but it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels like sugar and other artificial sweeteners do.
I am really trying to cut out the sugar that my family consumes and find that stevia is quite often a great replacement. This recipe calls for liquid stevia. I am hoping to make my own stevia liquid extract soon but until I do I use Sweet Leaf Sweet Drops. Sweet Leaf Sweet Drops are non-GMO, gluten-free, and kosher sugar alternative.
How to Make Homemade Sugar-Free Ketchup
This is a quick recipe that uses canned tomato paste and sauce. Of course, you can use fresh tomatoes in their place for an even healthier version of homemade ketchup but when I created this recipe I was in a pinch for time and needed to make it fast. I do use organic ingredients.
**You can scroll to the bottom for a printable recipe if you are in a pinch for time!**
First, gather your ingredients.
- 6 ounces of tomato paste
- 8 ounces of tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup + 3 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1/4 cup water (or enough to reach the consistency that you prefer)
- 12 drops of liquid stevia
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/8 teaspoon all spice
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
Next, mix them all up. Cover and simmer for one hour.
Finally, your done. Wasn’t that easy?!?
I store my homemade sugar-free ketchup in glass mason jars. I will confide that when I first made this recipe for my son I mixed it half and half with store-bought organic ketchup, he never even noticed a difference. He now prefers this homemade version over store-bought ketchup. This homemade ketchup can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.
