I am going to share how you can make your own homemade lip balm at home.   It is super easy and you may already have the ingredients in your kitchen.  Making your own lip balm eliminates the many chemicals and preservatives that are in many store-bought lip balms and it will save you money, the more natural lip balms can be  quite pricey!  If you are interested in how to make homemade lip balm please keep reading!

I am sharing a basic homemade lip balm formula that you can take and make your own creation based on your preferences.  I also share my favorite recipe, organic mint lip balm, but I will give you many options so you can create your own favorite recipe!

To begin, here is the basic formula for making your own homemade lip balm.  I will share the many options that you have to personalize your own lip balm below as well as step-by-step instructions on how to put it all together to create an amazing homemade lip balm.

How to Make Homemade Lip Balm

Homemade Lip Balm Formula:

  • 3 parts carrier oil
  • 1 part solid butter
  • 1 (heaping) part beeswax
  • essential oil (I use 2-4 drops per tablespoon)

I use tablespoons when I make my lip balm.  So, using this formula I would use 3 tablespoons of carrier oil, 1 tablespoon of solid butter, 1 heaping (I like to add a little bit more than exactly 1 part)  tablespoon of beeswax, about 20 drops of essential oil.  If you are unsure about what ingredients you would like to use please keep reading, I will share many options with you so you can create your favorite homemade lip balm!

To make your own homemade lip balm you will first decide on what ingredients you would like to use then place them (minus the essential oils) in a glass jar.  Of course you could use a double boiler but I like the jar approach.  You could also place a glass measuring dish in the water to make pouring at the end easier.

Place the lid on your jar then set it in a pot of water over medium to medium-high heat.

Swoosh your jar around occasionally until all of the ingredients have melted.

Remove the jar from the water and add your essential oils.  Swoosh again so that it is all mixed up then pour into desired containers.  I use metal tins but you can use plastic tubes as well.  Allow your mixture to cool for several minutes, it will firm up nicely, then cover with lid.

How to Make Homemade Lip Balm

Now that you know how to make your own homemade lip balm I will share with you some of the choices you have to create your own unique recipe.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are usually liquid but I have included coconut oil in the list because it is my favorite and can be solid or liquid depending on the temperature.  You can choose more than one oil, my favorites to use are coconut and sweet almond oils.Carrier oil for homemade lip balm

You can infuse the carrier oils with herbs if you desire.  To do this just place a pinch of the herb of choice into a glass jar covered with your carrier oil. Let it sit for several weeks then strain the herbs out.  You don’t have to infuse your oil but it is a fun option!

Here are a few ideas for herbs to add to your lip balm carrier oil:Herb infused carrier oil for lip balm

  • calendula is soothing
  • plantain is healing
  • lemon balm is good for cold sores
  • goldenseal is healing
  • rose petals are soothing

Solid Butters

Solid butters are solid at room temperature.  Adding a solid butter to your lip balm recipe adds a smoothness that is very refreshing.  I use shea butter but you could also use cocoa butter or mango butter.

Beeswax

I use beeswax in my homemade lip balm.  If you are wanting to make a vegan lip balm you could use candelilla or carnauba wax.

Adding Flavor

You can shake it up a bit with what flavors you would like to make.  My favorite is peppermint so I use peppermint essential oil.  I mix a bit of baking chocolate in my daughter’s lip balm and she loves it!

The following essential oils can be safely added to your lip balm:Adding essential oils to homemade lip balm

  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Lime
  • Mandarin
  • Sweet Orange
  • Clove (use a very small amount)
  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • You can also make a healing lip balm if you have cold sores using a very small amount of camphor or tea tree oils.

You can also add lip safe mica to your homemade lip balm to create a bit of shimmer.

My favorite recipe is organic mint lip balm, here is that recipe:
