I knew that it was going to rain this weekend but I didn’t expect more than 5 inches of rain and 40 mile wind gusts! Our pool is overflowing and there are palm frawns everywhere. We have been stuck inside most of the weekend. Alex is happily locked in his room with all of the new Lego’s that we acquired and Ava is content playing with Audrey so it was time to be productive!
I accomplished my weekend goal of making homemade laundry detergent. I am stoked about it because it was super easy and super cheap. The quality is great too, I don’t remember our clothes ever being this soft…even when I used to use fabric softener (yuck!). Next weekend I plan to tackle homemade deodorant…I will keep you posted!
Another great thing happened while trapped inside this weekend…I was inspired! I was poking around on the computer and I read an article about surviving without processed foods. I posted the link on my facebook page and a friend of mine commented about a cool blog about the Leake family who survived on only non processed food AKA real food. I read the blog for a little bit and was blown away.
I have been gradually feeding our family healthier foods and incorporating less processed foods (I love quinoa) but this article openend my eyes to how many changes I still had to make for the health of my family. I really like how the Leake family defined real foods and hope to oneday (soon) eliminate refined grains, refined sweetners, deep fried foods, and fast foods. I hope to feed my family foods that are more a prodcut of nature not industry. I am inspired!
Now, I am too cheap to ransack the kitchen and throw away or donate all of my supplies but I plan to replace them with real food. The things that I am planning on no longer using are rice & pasta mixes, the ones that are in a box with a seasoning packet, pasta sauces, salsas, store bought bread. There are too many things to list. So what I plan to do when I run out of my 4 jars (BOGO) Newman’s Best Spaghetti Sauce is not buy anymore. I will replace it with homemade. This will be a lifestyle change. Hmmm sounds really easy, but the truth is it is going to take ALOT more time and work on my end. But I really do think this will be a great thing and my family is certainly worth it!
I was talking to Alex about this last night and his main concern was his ketchup and Bizzaro’s Pizza (a local pizzeria). I assured him that he can still have ketchup, I plan on making our own, and he can still have Bizzaro’s pizza occasionally as a special treat. I also let him know that I was going to stop drinking soda. WHAT did I just say? Oh my, what have I gotten myself into? I cherish my one Coke a day…but I am ready to give it up. Lead by example right?
So now that I have made this decision I am looking into canning and all of the equipment that I will need to do this safely. The last think I want to do is make my family sick while trying to make us healthier!
So on this rainy windy weekend I made some awesome homemade laundry detergent and got inspired to feed my family only the best! I have alot of work ahead of me and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I will keep you posted and let you know how it goes!
So that is how I have spent my rainy windy weekend. Now I need to go tend to everything that hasn’t gotten done. Laundry, lesson plan for the week, packaging up & shipping stuff…..the list goes on and the baby just woke up.
